Definition of hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids are described as swelling and inflammation of the veins in the anus and lower rectum. Hemorrhoids can be caused by difficulty passing stools or increased pressure on the veins during pregnancy.

Causes of hemorrhoids

The veins around the anus tend to stretch under pressure and may bulge or swell. Hemorrhoid swelling can develop from increased pressure in the lower rectal area. Factors that can cause increased pressure include:

– Straining during bowel movements.

– Long time to complete toilet.

– Chronic diarrhea or constipation.

– Obesity.

- Pregnant.

– Anal intercourse.

– It is also possible to inherit a tendency to develop hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids are more likely as you age because the tissues that support the veins in the rectum and anus can weaken and stretch with aging.

Treatment of hemorrhoids

Most of the time, treating hemorrhoids involves self-care steps, such as lifestyle changes. But sometimes medication or surgery is necessary.

If hemorrhoids are only mildly uncomfortable, your doctor may recommend over-the-counter creams, suppositories, or pads. These products contain ingredients, such as witch hazel or hydrocortisone, that can relieve pain and itching, at least temporarily.

Do not use prescription creams or other products for longer than one week unless directed by your doctor. It can cause side effects, such as dermatitis, rash, and thinning of the skin.
